How to keep a good work-life balance as a Housekeeper

Emina 14 April 2025
As a housekeeper, you’re always on the move. You wake up early, work hard, and often feel tired at the end of the day. On top of that, you might also be taking care of your children, doing the grocery shopping, or managing the household — and that can sometimes be a lot.
Still, it is possible to balance work and private life. In this blog, we share tips from fellow colleagues who also work full-time or part-time as housekeepers.

1. Work at times that fit your life

At Klik, we believe your job should match your personal life. That’s why we always ask about your preferences in the first conversation:
Would you rather start early? Do you prefer working on weekdays, during weekends or both?
We use your answers to match you with a hotel that fits your lifestyle. This way, you’ll have a work environment that feels good—and you’ll still have time left for home.

2. Set boundaries between work and home life – and take time for yourself

When you get home, try to really leave work behind. Put away your phone with work apps or messages. It helps your mind to unwind.
After a long workday, it’s important to do something that helps you relax. For one person, that might be reading a book; for another, it could be something more active or creative.

Reading, especially fiction, is a great way to clear your head. But there are many ways to relax:
A walk or bike ride in the fresh air helps release your thoughts and recharge. A warm shower or bath can also work wonders—it relaxes your muscles and helps you literally wash off the day.

Some people find peace in listening to music or a podcast. Others prefer silence or meditation. If your mind is racing, breathing exercises can calm your body and bring balance.

Cooking can also be relaxing—if you enjoy it. But sometimes, it’s even nicer to just prepare something simple and relax on the couch.

Spending time with family or friends can give you energy, but if you need some quiet time alone, that’s just as important. The key is choosing what suits you and makes you feel good.

3. Limit screen time before bed

It’s recommended to avoid screens for at least one hour before going to sleep—especially phones, tablets, laptops, and TVs.
Screens emit blue light, which can interfere with the production of melatonin—the hormone that helps your body get into sleep mode.
So if you’re on your phone or watching shows right before bed, it might be harder to fall asleep or get quality rest.

Make the most of your breaks

You’re entitled to breaks during your workday. Try to really take that time: sit down, have something to eat or drink, and don’t keep working.
Taking proper breaks helps you be more productive and less tired.

Ask for help – you’re not in this alone

Many people feel like they have to do everything by themselves: work, housework, childcare. But asking for help is a sign of strength.
Talk to your partner, family, neighbors, or someone in your community if things get too much. You’re not alone.

Connect with your colleagues – Work is more enjoyable when you’re not alone

You spend a lot of time at work. When you have good colleagues, it’s often easier to enjoy your job.
A positive atmosphere makes the day go faster, reduces stress, and makes it easier to help each other when things get tough.

You don’t have to be best friends—but showing a little interest in each other makes a big difference.
